Three chilling short novels by bestselling author Mikel Santiago. Set in different locations and featuring various protagonists, these stories take us on a disturbing journey where, as night falls, the characters’ worlds transform into terrifying nightmares.
This work consists of three short novels, all connected by a common theme: the horrors that can unfold when daylight gives way to darkness. Various protagonists, trapped in loneliness and despair, delve into suspense and the shadows of the night.
The first novel, Story of a Perfect Crime (Historia de un crimen perfecto) follows the confession of murderer Eric Rot, who writes his final words before taking his own life. He recounts how he worked for the Fitzwilliam family and fell in love with their daughter, Linda, whom he had watched grow up. Their relationship became complicated when Linda, pregnant with Eric’s child, begged him to run away with her.
Fearing the loss of his social status, he decides to kill her. However, Eric didn’t anticipate Detective Riffle, who will not rest until he finds the real culprit. But most of all, Eric never expected that Linda’s shadow would return to haunt him in unimaginable ways.
The second story, Night of Souls (Noche de almas), follows young travelers Pía and Jorge as they wander through the desert of a South American country. Fortuitously, they find an old colonial house that gives them a glimmer of hope. The owners, Elena and Manuel, offer them food, water, and shelter. However, from the moment they enter, Pía and Jorge sense a strange energy in the house. Their suspicions are confirmed when the owners insist that they lock all doors and windows at night. Elena and Manuel claim it’s to protect them from sandstorms, but the travelers suspect the real reason is something far more sinister.
The third novel, Sycamore Avenue, follows Tom Cavanagh, a writer seeking inspiration, who moves into an old house on Sycamore Avenue in Dublin. Nearby, there is a cemetery, but that is not the most unsettling thing about the neighborhood. A far greater mystery is the abandoned house across the street, known as “The Sullivan House,” a place shrouded in dark legends about its former inhabitants. One sleepless night, Tom sees an old man enter the house. Curious, he mentions it to his neighbor, Amelia, who confesses that she used to see the same man enter the house forty years ago. Strangely, their descriptions of him match exactly—as if he hadn’t aged a single day. Skeptical yet intrigued, Tom decides to uncover the truth, though what he finds is far beyond anything he could have imagined.
RELEVANT INFORMATION: Mikel Santiago is one of the most successful contemporary Spanish-language authors. With his Illumbe Trilogy and El hijo olvidado, he has sold over 900,000 copies, translated into multiple languages, and published in over twenty countries, achieving both critical and commercial success. His international hit, The Last Night at Tremore Beach, has been adapted into a successful Netflix series.
With this novel, Santiago returns to his roots, as it is a collection of three long-form stories or short novels that he wrote during his time in Dublin, long before becoming a bestselling author. He draws inspiration from great horror writers such as Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King, particularly in creating eerie atmospheres and maintaining a relentless pace.
Because these are three standalone stories connected by tone, this book could be ideal for a miniseries, even one directed by different filmmakers—similar to Criminal, The Haunting of Hill House, or Midnight Mass.
