Alicia Gaspar de Alba

Alicia Gaspar de Alba (El Paso/Ciudad Juárez, 1965)is a scholar, cultural critic, novelist and poet whose works include historical novels and scholarly studies on Chicana/o art, culture and sexuality.

She received a bachelor’s and a master’s in English from the University of Texas, and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of New Mexico. In 1994, she was one of six founding faculty members of the Interdisciplinary Instruction in Chicana and Chicano Studies at University of California.

Since 2013, Gaspar de Alba has been chairing the LGBTQ Studies Department at UCLA, where she is also working on a proposal for the first Ph.D. program in LGBTQ Studies in the nation.

 

RELEVANT INFORMATION

Gaspar de Alba is a chicano author highly acclaimed both by the audience and by the critics. Among her many awards, she owns two International Latino Book Awards, one Lambda Literary Award for Best Lesbian Mystery for Desert Blood, one Premio Atlán Literary Prize, a Latino Literary Hall of Fame, and one Gold Shield Faculty Prize for Academic Excellence.

The author is such a referent in the contemporary chicano literature, and the most worldwide known LGBTQ writer of her community.
