Mercedes Gutiérrez holds a Ph.D. in American Literature, specializing in American road-trip novels. She has published her stories in anthologies and in U.S. and Spanish magazines such as Sibila, El Kraken, Voces, Auca, Quimera, Revista de Occidente, and Clarín. She has also translated the works of Walt Whitman into Spanish and runs the blog American X-Ray, which focuses on American history.

After publishing two short story collections, El batallón de las Lincoln is her first novel, for which she had access to historical archives in the United States and Spain that she has researched for over a decade.
