The untold story of the negotiations that led to the release of the prisoners of war in the Bay of Pigs in 1962
After the unsuccessful invasion of the Bay of Pigs in Cuba in 1961, President Kennedy’s administrative cabinet allowed the Cuban Families Committee for the Liberation of the Bay of Pigs Prisoners of War, Inc. organization to make their best to free more than one thousand combatants, that had been prisoners by the Cuban government.
This is a unique book that contains 10 years of rigorous investigation. Moreover, it tells one of the most interesting events that took place during the Cold War: the two-years-time secret negotiations to release the prisoners that participated in the Bay of Pigs’ invasion. This event involved famous characters, such as Fidel Castro, John F. Kennedy, Bob Kennedy and James B. Donovan -a character which was interpreted by Tom Hanks in Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies-.
Donovan, along with Berta Barreto de las Heras were the ones who managed to start the negotiations with Fidel Castro.
The political tensions between the USA and Cuba, together with the Cuban Missile Crisis and the incursion of the Soviet Union in the Occidental Hemisphere were the background of this magnificent story.
The main US media, Madison Avenue advertising agencies and many other principal companies were involved in the negotiations in order to bring together the prisoners with their families.
RELEVANT FACTS: Pablo Pérez-Cisneros y John B. Donovan are the direct heirs of the main characters in After the Bay of Pigs.
