After being robbed by bandits, a young student from Salamanca, on his way to European universities, encounters the Devil, who tries, unsuccessfully, to make him succumb to various temptations. After overcoming the mishap and resuming his path, the Student finds a beautiful Infanta (from whom he is immediately enthralled), and the buffoon Cascabel accompanies her. Although the young man’s advances seem to have an effect, the buffoon’s thrusts prevent him from completing his attempts with the girl. Humbled, the Student resorts to the Devil again to achieve his love goals.
