The crime that divided a country. The origin of Montoneros
29th May 1970, Buenos Aires, plain daylight. A group of men in their twenties dressed in army uniforms show up at the house of the Argentinian President, Mr. Pedro Eugenio Aramburu. One of them, Fernando Abal Medina, tells the President: “General, you are coming with us”. Aramburu does not show any resistance, he thinks that the young men are escorting him to the celebration of the National Argentinian Army Day.
Three days later, in a country house in Timote (a province of Buenos Aires), those young men, constituted as a revolutionary court, sentence Aramburu to death for the 1955 coup d’etat against Juan Domingo Perón, the ban imposition on Peronism, the executions of civilians and army officers, and for stealing Evita Perón’s dead body. Aramburu is executed and his body is hidden until they find Eva Perón’s dead body. This is the birth of the Montoneros, an organization nobody knew about, composed of high-class catholic boys who decided to take justice into their own hands, and that will corner the military-civilian power of those years.
María O’Donnell delves into this notorious case that still provokes much discomfort among the Argentinians. The author visited Mario Firmenich in his exile in Barcelona to talk about the crime he never regretted. An incredible investigation that combines the pulse of a thriller with historical rigor and brings to light unedited and revealing testimonies.
