The Lincoln Battalion (El batallón de las Lincoln)

During the Spanish Civil War, thirteen brave American women travelled to Spain to join the Republic, enlisting in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to fight against Franco’s coup. This incredible and often forgotten episode in history has the potential to become a documentary, docuseries, or even an entirely original work of fiction.

The Lincoln Battalion tells the vibrant stories of Salaria Kea, Marion Merriman, Evelyn Hutchins, Lini Fuhr, Mildred Rackley, Anne Tufts, Kitty Bowler, Rose Abramson, Frances Vanzant, Hilda Bell, Ave Bruzzichesi, Thelma Erickson, and Muriel Rukeyser. These women, primarily nurses, writers, and artists, defied the social conventions of their time and risked their lives, driven by a deep sense of social and political commitment.

The book presents an emotional, human, and well-documented narrative that brings these figures back from obscurity and honors the courage of the thirteen American roses. It achieves this through exhaustive research, drawing on primary sources such as letters and diaries of the volunteers, historical archives in the United States and Spain, and oral testimonies from historians and family members.
