Doña Irene, Marquise of Montalbán, fosters Gerardo, supposedly the son of her brother and a commoner woman. However, she discovers through some letters that everything is a lie and expels him. Gerardo, disconsolate and fearful of returning with his mother, returns to the Marquise. Finally, despite everything she opens her doors in proof of compassion and love.
RELEVANT FACTS: This comedy with hints of melodrama was a success since its premiere, where was casted the great actress María Guerrero.
Benavente won the Nobel Prize in Literature (1922). He treated all the theatrical genres and developed a broad gallery of human characters. Many of his plays have been taken to cinema with success and many versions for TV have been made. Benavente’s dialogues are excellent, full with irony. He has been compared to Oscar Wilde.
