A great lesson amidst chalks and laughters.
The Teacher is a successful play that had its world premiere in New York with a bilingual production.
América Alcalá is a teacher on the verge of retirement who turns to alcohol, terrified by the impending old age and loneliness. To top it off, there is a student in this class who particularly worries her: Daniela, a teenager who has started a transition process. Her behavior leaves much to be desired, and América doesn’t know how to handle her.
América seeks the support of Ortiz, Daniela’s father, and arranges a series of meetings aimed at improving Daniela’s behavior. Ortiz is a young, uneducated man who works in a supermarket’s fish market. Down-to-earth, he takes pride in his simplicity and lack of pretensions, but like América, he is very concerned about Daniela’s behavior. His daughter is also starting to cause problems at home.
During the initial meetings, the evident differences between América and Ortiz come to light. Ortiz cannot stand América’s airs of superiority, and she cannot understand Ortiz’s attitude towards life. At first, they constantly argue, but they soon realize they must join forces to achieve their common goal: helping Daniela cope with the challenges of adolescence.
