The Tenderness (La ternura)

Tenderness eases the pain of an impossible love.

Naima and Marco work together and, despite their age difference, have forged a strong friendship and attraction over the years. But their relationship goes beyond affection; they have developed a bond as intimate as it is strange in the eyes of others, one that they themselves cannot define.

One summer, Marco invites Naima to spend the holidays with his family in Italy. The house where they stay belongs to the family of Elisa, Marco’s wife, who, along with their children and her parents, is on vacation with them. Although everyone welcomes Naima warmly, it is clear from the beginning that her presence in the house feels strange to everyone.

Naima makes efforts to integrate with the family, caring for Marco’s daughter as if she were her own, and participating in family discussions. Meanwhile, Marco is distant, barely speaking to Naima, and she cannot understand what is happening.

Marco’s contradictory signals leave Naima confused, but the time together causes Naima to begin developing strong emotions for an increasingly absent Marco.

That summer, Naima will have to learn that intimacy and tenderness do not necessarily lead to love, and that desire and affection are not the same.
