A historical look at Latin America.
“Open Veins of Latin America” is a collection of accounts about the history of Latin America, highlighting the challenges the region has faced over time. Since the Spanish conquest, the continent has experienced multiple invasions and continues to be influenced by major foreign powers. The book covers topics such as the decline of the native population in the 16th century, slavery, and the harsh working conditions that followed, as well as the extraction of resources by the United States and Europe. The work documents numerous historical and contemporary events, evidencing the exploitation of natural resources and local labor. Workers in various regions, such as Bolivian miners in Oruro and Peruvian fishmeal producers, face adverse conditions and low wages. Throughout history, there have been uprisings and revolutionary movements in response to these conditions. In several cases, the United States intervened in countries like Mexico to protect its commercial interests, resulting in government changes and political instability. This journey through Latin America’s history aims to provide a comprehensive view of the region’s struggles and the impact of external influences on its development.
