Pepa Doncel

The story relates Felisa Rodriguez de Medina’s life, known artistically as Pepa Doncel. After getting married with Mr. Cifuentes, she gains certain prestige among the small local bourgeoisie. After her husband’s death, she insists on marrying her daughter Genoveva, in order to be accepted again by the local bourgeoisie. But the suitor, a well-positioned man in society, ends up marrying Felisa herself.

 

RELEVANT FACTS: The story was adapted into a film directed by Luis Lucia in 1969.

Benavente won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1922. He treated all the theatrical genres and developed a broad gallery of human characters. Many of his plays have been taken to cinema with success and many versions for TV have been made. Benavente’s dialogues are excellent, full with irony. He has been compared to Oscar Wilde.
