The Last Executioner | The Hour of the Wolf
He can’t stop killing, and you won’t be able to look away.
Dr. Lena Mayoral is a prestigious criminalist with a turbulent past living in Barcelona. Her stability is shaken when a serial killer begins to terrorize the city, and she becomes obsessed with the case, putting her own life in danger.
In The Last Executioner, a series of brutal murders baffle the police. The bodies bear a strange mark on the nape, and alongside them, an enigmatic message always appears: “Someone has to do it.”
As impossible as it seems, a serial killer is executing victims with a garotte, the same instrument used by executioners centuries ago, considered the cruelest killing machine ever devised.
When Dr. Lena Mayoral is urgently tasked with delving into the mind of the psychopath, she cannot imagine how complicated the investigation will become or the dangers she will face. The case grows more complex as the investigation into the deceased reveals a series of hidden stories of violence and abuse.
As the number of victims increases, and under growing media pressure, Lena becomes obsessed with a killer who seems to be playing a macabre game with her.
The Hour of the Wolf begins in 2015, in the Boí Valley, a small village in the Pyrenees, when a young and discreet mother is found dead in her home. She was strangled, and her eight-year-old son, Daniel, has disappeared.
Seven years after The Last Executioner, in Barcelona, criminologist Lena Mayoral has taken a break to recover psychologically from the attack she suffered from the serial killer known as “the Executioner.” It is then that the family of the young woman who died years ago contacts her to help them write a true crime novel about the mysterious case and continue the investigation.
But a threat looms over Mayoral. The Executioner, who was imprisoned and is awaiting trial, has not forgotten the criminologist who unmasked him, harbouring deep feelings toward her ranging from admiration to resentment.
Lena moves to the victims’ village and settles in what was their home. Shortly thereafter, the investigation takes a dramatic turn when a fifteen-year-old boy, the same age Daniel would be at that time, is found dead in a village church.
