The story happens from March 1868 to February 1875. Tomás comes back to take over the family business of votive offerings and candle making after studying in Madrid. He comes back with his friend Mateu, a sculptor and intellectual whom he makes partner. Both Tomás and Mateu share a republican ideology. Mateu wants to revamp the Company and free it from its only client: the church. The outbreak of the 1868 Revolution gives a twist to this situation: Tomás is elected mayor and from his new position he is going to have to deal with all actors and in society and workers. Having to face and support them, he will end up in the arms of his classmates: landholders and bourgeoisie.
