The house with seven balconies is a mansion in a small countryside town where the inhabitants go to mass every Sunday. Ramón lives in it. He is a widower, a gambler and a womanizer who spent away the fortune his wife left him. He lives with Genoveva (his sister in law), who lives in a world of fantasy since her husband went to America to seek fortune. Uriel (his son) is a weird teenager, weak and sickly, that will try and defend the family’s tradition and pride against Amanda’s influence (the housekeeper, and Ramon’s lover), who completely controls him. Ramón and Amanda are the antagonists of the story as they represent greed, ambition for power and lust; on the other hand, Genoveva and Uriel represent innocence, hope and love. There are also some great secondary characters: Rosina, Clara, Alicia, Don Germán and the Grandfather.

Casona was one of the most important Spanish writers of the 20th century. He lived between Spain and Latin America, where his work had a great success in cinema and theatre, especially in Argentina, where several movies about his work were produced. He received the Premio Nacional de Literatura and the Premio de Teatro Lope de Vega, among others.
