In love, madness is the sane thing. The great love story of Antonio Machado.
Nieves Herrero reveals for the first time the true story of the life of Pilar Valderrama, Antonio Machado’s muse, a woman who, in the twilight of her life, was brave enough to confess to the world that she was the Guiomar of whom the most beautiful verses of the poet talked. A member of the high society of Madrid, married and mother of three children, she risked everything for the love of the only man who understood her.
Pilar de Valderrama was a poet and a writer. A woman committed with her time, who belonged to the Lyceum Club, where the intellectual women used to get together. Antonio Machado and Pilar de Valderrama were part of two completely different worlds: she was monarchic and he was republican. She was from the high-class society and he, from his humble position as a teacher, was part of the intellectual movements which were involved in the arrival of the Second Republic. But belonging to two so different worlds was no obstacle for their love. Their story is the center of this novel, but we will also know the complicated story of those years and the context of this complicated relationship. She was married and had three children, he was widowed. Both of them trapped in their own loneliness ended up in an impossible love.
Through the testimony and the unpublished information given to her by Guiomar’s granddaughter, the author rebuilds this fascinating story while she also takes us through the key years of the recent history of Spain, which end with Machado’s death in Colliure in 1939. In his pocket, they found a last verse «Those blue days and that childhood sun». Did he die thinking about Pilar, the real woman, always dressed in blue, hidden behind the Guiomar of the poems?
