The great novel of Tina Modotti, the woman who broke all of the moulds of her time.
Tina Modotti is an icon of art and politics, both for her private life and for her work. A fighting woman, strong and legendary, who shared her 44 years of life with emblematic personalities like Edward Weston, Diego Rivera, Xavier Guerrero, Julio Antonio Mella or Vittorio Vidali. A woman who found in photography the ideal means to express her disconformity and her compromise.
After leaving Italy and after a brief stay in the California of spiritual and sexual freedom as a Hollywood actress, Modotti lands in Mexico hand in hand with her lover, Edward Weston. There she faces an enormous cultural shock, where the great intellectuals and artists of the early 20th century welcome her.
But that dreamy and happy life of fantasies and idealism ends in 1929 when they murder her lover, Cuban journalist and revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella, in front of her. Persecuted as a possible culprit of the crime, Tina Modotti is forced to escape Mexico and to find refuge in the Soviet Union, where she suffers the consequences of Stalin’s totalitarian regime.
From the Soviet Union she goes to Spain, in the mid 30s. There she finds a distorted reality, a society that can already smell the war, the breakdown of the republic and the bitter defeat at the hands of Francisco Franco.
Tina eventually goes back to Mexico in 1939 as a refugee, but the country is not like she remembered it. The communists, divided in Troskists and Stalinists, make up an altered and revolutionized Mexico that stops her from recovering from the wounds of the Spanish Civil War.
RELEVANT INFORMATION: With Tinísima, Elena Poniatowska, Polish-Mexican political activist and feminist leader, becomes the portrait painter of the historical condition of women par excellence and reaches international recognition. This international bestseller was awarded the Premio Mazatlán. Tinísima has been translated into English, Italian and German.
The work was born to be an audiovisual project. The author dedicated more than 10 years to exhaustively investigate and create a screenplay that was never filmed. However, she knew how to put the story in a novel that is perfectly adaptable to the audiovisual format.
The critics say:
“Tinísima is a novel that every woman must read, as it shows a different model of femininity, where Modotti breaks up with every mould in which society tries to put her.” UCLV.
