The extraordinary life of Nahui Olin, a legend of the Mexican feminist movement.
Carmen Mondragón, better known as Nahui Olin, is one of the most resounding voices in Hispanic arts of the early 20th century. She was a muse, poet, painter and initiator of sexual liberation: a true icon of the avant-garde movement.
However, her art soon fell into oblivion and was eclipsed by all her male counterparts. That is until Tomás Zurián discovered her in 1978 and decided to rescue her art through her paintings, books, letters, texts, documents and personal objects.
Total sexuality of the Universe (Totalidad sexual del cosmos) follows in the footsteps of Tomás Zurián and his research to unveil the life of Diego Rivera’s muse. Thus, Zurián takes us back to her childhood in early 20th century Mexico in the midst of a controversial and conservative family; to her youth in the most outlandish and bohemian Paris; and to her meetings and events with the greats of the time such as Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, and the man who would become her husband, Dr. Atl.
However, Zurián will also explore her dark years, those in which she ceased to be Nahui Olin and became a forgotten woman. Years in which her brilliance was overcasted, and in which Carmen Mondragón walked the streets of Mexico City’s Historic Center without anyone recognizing her.
A unique and remarkable life, full of myths, romances and adventures. A legend of the Mexican feminist movement.
