A legal trip to the deepest Arizona in the 1950s.
In the summer of 1959 in Arizona, Michael Shaw, an alcoholic lawyer struggling with his reputation as one of the best attorneys, is assigned to represent María Sánchez Curry in the bloody murder of her husband.
On the other hand, Toni García is a young Chicano girl who has no professional future in the state due to her latino origins in spite of her education and intellect. Desperate for work, she accepts a position as the defendant’s interpreter.
María Sánchez and Ben Curry, her husband, were a well-known couple at local bars, where they used to get drunk and fight. Even though María acted in self-defense, the killing of a white man by a Mexican woman is not permissible in a time when women still live subjugated to men.
