Lovesick or misdiagnosis?
Mario Esfarcies, a wealthy young man, is diagnosed with cancer. Fearing that he would die in the throes of the disease, he decides to commit suicide by making a will in favor of his best friend. After several attempts and after realizing that he does not have the courage to take his own life, he hires an assassin to kill him. The friend, the future heir, increases the assassin’s payment to speed up the “process”. But Mario decides he does not want to die and flees, meeting Palmera, his star-crossed lover, in Siberia. Thus begins a chase through several cities that leads to a totally unexpected ending.
RELEVANT DATA: Wait For Me in Siberia, Darling! (¡Espérame en Siberia, vida mía!) is one of Jardiel Poncela’s most important novels, published in several languages. Its fame gave rise to a film of the same name, directed in 1969 by René Cardona.
Although the story takes place in several countries, the nature of the story does not prevent the novel from being adapted to several cities within a single country. The plot has a wide range of micro-stories that would allow for the expansion of the universe.
Jardiel Poncela, despite his short life, is one of the most relevant authors of the twentieth century, having won the most prestigious awards for playwriting and literature written in Spanish. His plays continue today in the most important theaters in Europe and Latin America, and his novels continue to be reprinted in many countries and have been made into films with great success.
