Women (Mujeres)

The rebellious Mexican women who changed the curse of History.

In the 1970s, in front of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, an old woman sells the tourists ancient photos: photographies of women. A young poet realises the seller is Nahui Oli, a Mexican artist, writer, pianist and model who used to shine in the 1920s.

Throughout her words, the poet gets involved in the atmosphere of the 1920s and 30s in Mexico, a time when women were the real protagonists of the revolution. The term “feminism” itself was born in Mexico in that period, when the first Feminist Leagues were founded. These women occupied relevant charges in the cultural sector of the country.

Some of the figures appearing in Nahui’s stories are Antonieta Rivas Mercado, the main referent in the Mexican modern theatre; Nellie Campobelo, founder of the National Ballet; Frida Kahlo, the youngest of the group, destined for becoming the brightest star of that firmament; and Chavela Vargas, the famous singer who vindicated the “Mexicanidad”.
