The Photographer’s Daughter (La hija del fotógrafo)

A Photographic Legacy, Rebellious Loves, and Family Secrets.

When Carlos flees from Mexico City to Veracruz, he is drawn to a photograph vendor, and despite never having seen a camera before, he decides to buy the Popular Pressman Reflex. Carlos’s decision marks the beginning of a family business in the heart of Mexico City’s Historic Center, called “Foto Robles.”

Through his granddaughter, Julia, inserted into this family filled with progesterone and melodrama and with an intricate narrative structure, we will follow the members of this extensive family tree, with the popular Pressman Reflex always present.

We will get to know the childhood of Matilde, Julia’s mother, who receives spankings for disobedience. Regina, Julia’s paternal grandmother, who elopes as a teenager with her first love. And Julia herself, a girl determined to oppose her father’s rigid expectations. She will endure a loveless marriage and become her boss’s mistress. Both relationships will turn her life into something abominable and violent. But ultimately, Julia will manage to break free from them and rebuild her life: she will resume her studies, move in with two friends, and enjoy various experiences filled with alcohol, parties, and sex. Everything will change when she meets Diego, her roommate’s ex-boyfriend, and wants to steer her life in his direction.

What the critics have said:

“An emotional story that portrays the amorous mazes of our time. An entertaining book like few others, with touches of black humor about modern society.” – Mixar López, Chicago Tribune.

“As the heir to a passion for capturing images for generations, Duclaud used this guiding thread to narrate the lives of rebellious or submissive women, all Mexican, but all leave a trace in the memory of those who engage with these texts, as they refer to their own experiences and memories.” – Alejandro Baillet, La Jornada.
