The manipulator (El manipulador)

A bestselling crime novel mysteriously anticipates a case that occurs years later. The first person to be investigated will, of course, be the author, who also happens to be a former schoolmate of the witty police inspector Yoel Garza, who is leading the investigation. But while it seems clear that the writer is the culprit, it is far less clear how to prove it. An intense psychological thriller, this is an excruciating battle between two brilliant minds and a truth hidden in the past.

Yoel Garza is a methodical judicial police inspector stationed in Santiago de Compostela, living with his fiancée, Ángela. One day, he receives a call about the discovery of a skeleton with a bullet hole, a gold tooth, and the engagement ring that Ángela lost months earlier. The crime seems eerily familiar to Yoel: he read about it in a mystery novel written by an old schoolmate that described an identical scene. The writer is Antonio Serván, now a successful suspense bestseller author, but who in the past suffered bullying and abuse from his father. Yoel immediately suspects him. But the discovery of another body, found at a crime scene that also resembles another scene from one of the author’s books, drives Yoel to meet with his former schoolmate to investigate further. During their meeting, Yoel comes to realize that Antonio Serván is indeed the killer, as he confesses that he intends to become the only author of novels based on real events that have not yet happened. And at the same time, he seeks to exact revenge on Yoel with an elaborate plan dating back to their adolescence, one that threatens to harm those Yoel loves the most. Yoel is drawn into a web of traps and manipulations as he discovers that the revenge plot is connected to his distant, billionaire father and his estranged sister, with whom he hasn’t spoken in years.
