An incredible journey of a young Catalan woman to a fascinating mill in a picturesque village in Liguria, Italy. Gianna will not only investigate her Italian roots, unveiling a mystery from the past, but she will also discover that love sometimes appears in the most unexpected places. A story about women, ties to the past, and emotions from a bestselling author who has captivated tens of thousands of readers in Spain and Italy. Perfect for an adaptation that connects both countries!
Gianna was raised by her grandmother in the backroom of “La Cucina dei Fiori,” an Italian deli in Barcelona. She grew up knowing very little about her origins, not even why their family consists almost entirely of women. When her grandmother passes away, Gianna faces the difficult possibility of selling her properties but remains determined to keep the shop. Surprisingly, she finds among her grandmother’s belongings a key to a mill located in a small town in northern Italy and the incomplete diary of her great-grandmother, Anice, who appears to have been the first family member to emigrate from Italy to Spain. Thus, Gianna embarks on a journey to Italy in search of her roots, also driven by the disappointment of a romantic relationship with a married man, Pau, and an unexpected pregnancy about which she has not yet decided.
In Liguria, she discovers that Anice left behind a garden with which she had an almost mystical connection, an intrinsic part of her identity; she also learns about the impossible romance she had with a duke’s son due to their opposing social classes, among other findings. There, she meets Mauro, a solitary man now living in the mill, who becomes the support her ex, Pau, could not provide.
After her journey to Italy and her connection to her family’s history, Gianna resolves that her independence and preserving her legacy are the most important things to her. Thus, despite Pau’s insistence on getting back together and abandoning the baby, Gianna decides to keep it, with the support of Mauro, with whom she begins a romantic relationship. Finally, it is Gianna’s brother, Carlo, who takes over “La Cucina dei Fiori” in Barcelona, while she settles in Italy and honors her legacy in the most cherished way: by restoring her great-grandmother’s garden, which now becomes a communal space for friends and family, a place that watches over the future while preserving the past.
RELEVANT INFORMATION: El jardín de las mujeres Verelli is a contemporary drama novel that bridges the past and the present, embodied by the great-grandmother and great-granddaughter, and shows how issues that troubled people almost a century ago can still be relevant today. Beyond this, it is a novel that portrays strong women with defined personalities who must question their roots, the importance of home, guilt, the incompatibility between personal and professional life, and the search for oneself. Despite its ties to the past, it is a 100% contemporary story. Carla Montero transports us to Barcelona, but also to the Italian Liguria, immersing us in its landscapes, gastronomy, and history. This is the fifth novel by this nationally renowned author, a bestseller in Spain and Italy (with around 50,000 copies sold in Spain alone) and translated into several European languages.
