Getting to know each other again (Volver a conocernos)

About what we gain while we’re losing it all.

Hugo, a seven-year-old boy, is going through the worst moment of his life: his parents —whose names are unknown— are getting divorced.

On the verge of losing the life he had built, his father realizes the time he has wasted, the moments he didn’t appreciate, and all the memories he could have created with his son. Truth is, he has let the upbringing of Hugo fall solely on his ex-wife’s shoulders.

His long silences and absences have created a cold relationship between Hugo and him, making him almost a stranger to the child. And now that it’s just the two of them, without the possibility of turning to his wife when he doesn’t know what to do, the father decides to turn his life around and win back his son’s heart, to become the father he should have always been. To do so, the man turns to literature: he tells Hugo stories that captivate his attention, in order create topics of conversation between them.

This sad yet hopeful story is told through two timelines: the past, depicting all the decisions that have gradually fractured the bond between Hugo’s father and his family; and the present, where he strives to regain the connection with his son. Getting to Know Each Other Again is thus an intimate tale about divorce and fatherhood that shows us everything we can gain, if we make the effort, when we realize all that we stand to lose.
