Two teenage investigators willing to do anything to find the culprit.
Holly Hernandez can’t wait to start classes at her new elite high school in New York City. However, everything changes when Mr. Friedman, her social studies teacher, is murdered and her mother must take over the case. Holly, an avid and passionate crime novel reader wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps, so she decides to investigate the murder on her own.
Her classmate, Xander Herrera, became one of the main suspects, given that he had what appeared to be traces of blood on his hands and everyone had witnessed the teacher humiliating him in front of the entire class. His effort to prove his innocence is almost as great as his need to solve the crime before Holly does.
After being cleared of the crime, Xander and Holly continue to investigate separately, which leads them to a number of suspects, including Coach DiGeronimo, who they had seen arguing with Friedman, and a mysterious person who had met with him days before his death. While on their search, a second murder occurs: the school’s guidance counselor was found dead in her car. Holly and Xander are forced to put an end to their differences and work as a team. They put their minds together in order to find the culprit as soon as possible.
In the end, Xander finds a trophy from a Mission Venus nightclub dance contest, which allows them to fit all the pieces of the mystery together. Gorney, the trainer’s assistant, is the killer and her killing spree is far from over.

What the critics have said:
“A story that captures the high school ups and downs and the atmosphere of the 1970s very well. The mystery is plausible, and I enjoyed watching Holly and Xander approach the mystery from two very opposite angles.” Goodreads.
“The fast-paced and skillfully developed murder mystery gives equal weight to both characters, their separate lives and their individual problems, while also examining gender inequality and social injustice and offering an interesting look at the history of disco as a safe place for queer people and people of color.” Kirkus Reviews.
