Amid disappearances, murders, clandestine relationships, and sordid secrets, these novels are a perfect example of thrillers with a strong dramatic component. They are true puzzles in which the characters, by revealing their secrets, show who they really are.
Anna Guirao is a famous Spanish actress who disappeared on April 19, 2019. Everyone assumed she was dead, but actually, she was kidnapped and kept in an underground cell under inhumane conditions. Thirteen months later, she is found wandering in the forest near the village of Portella, Lérida. The body of her alleged kidnapper is also discovered, although she doesn’t remember killing him or even seeing him during her captivity.
When she returns home, everything is completely different from how she left it: Adrián, her husband, has started a romantic relationship with his assistant, Inés, and neither of them seems particularly thrilled about her return.
Even her eight-year-old son, Samuel—whose memory gave Anna strength during her captivity—doesn’t seem to be on her side. Only her sister, Lara, remains loyal to her.
Vera Ros, the detective in charge of the investigation, works to uncover who kidnapped Anna. Meanwhile, secrets begin to surface—nearly everyone in the story seems to have a good reason to want Anna out of the picture.
The situation grows even more complicated with new mysteries: how is Anna’s kidnapping connected to an unsolved roadside murder? What link does the killing have to Anna’s husband? And who is Martina, Lara’s girlfriend and an actress who took Anna’s place in a hit TV series?
Everyone seems to be hiding something—including Anna herself.
La mentira de Vera Ros is the second book in the duology, although it doesn’t share the same characters, except for the police inspector investigating the cases.
In this installment, Vera is spending the summer with her family—her husband, successful writer Daniel Monzón, and their children—in a house on the Costa Brava. However, during one of her morning walks to her favorite cove, Vera runs into Alan, a summer fling she thought she had forgotten.
The two begin to lean on each other to face their own ghosts: Alan battles self-destructive tendencies and grief over his wife’s death, while Vera feels trapped in a loveless marriage and the suffocating roles of wife and mother.
Vera’s disappointment with Daniel deepens when she discovers a message from his lover on his phone. Tensions rise when Vera and Alan catch Daniel with his mistress, Patricia, at the cove. They witness an argument, and the next day, Daniel disappears. A few days later, Patricia’s lifeless body is found, making Daniel the prime suspect.
Additionally, a mysterious message on Daniel’s computer suggests someone was threatening him. Daniel contacts Vera, who assures him she has no intention of returning.
Meanwhile, Vera and Alan’s past secrets start to emerge. Vera’s relationship with Daniel is revealed as toxic, marked by abuse and control. Vera and Alan grow closer, though she is unsure whether she can trust him. Alan, too, is hiding a painful secret.
What scares Vera most is the possibility of Daniel returning. Is Daniel really who he claims to be? What will happen if Vera decides to leave everything behind to follow her dreams with Alan? The truth is shrouded in shadows, and Vera’s journey to freedom will be as dangerous as it is eye-opening.
RELEVANT INFORMATION: In the Anna and Vera series, both stories are connected by the presence of the same police inspector investigating the cases. However, the procedural aspect does not take center stage, as the novels focus more on the characters’ relationships and conflicts.
Both novels alternate between different characters’ points of view. Each reveals their own version of events, uncovering secrets and adding new pieces to the intricate narrative puzzle.
