Where there is cheese, there will always be mice.
In July 2011, the clergy of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in the north of Spain reported a notable absence: The Codex Calixtinus, the 12th century’s illuminated manuscript (valued at eight million euros) considered to be the world’s first travel guide and a reference for millions of pilgrims when they walk the Camino de Santiago, had disappeared.
The theft of the Codex Calixtinus, a work surrounded by mystery, legends and controversy from its origins to the present day, shocked the entire Spanish and international society. To recover the famous relic, an operation led by the Historical Heritage Brigade was launched and they traveled to Santiago. After a year of investigation, the priceless book, historical heritage, a 900-year-old work of art, appeared in the garage of the former electrician of the cathedral who had just been fired and was seeking revenge.
Despite the fact that the case had been closed, the journalist Luis Rendueles, who went a step further in the investigation, knew that there were still many things left unsaid and unburied. Following the thread of the robbery, he ended up unraveling a whole series of parallel looting that hovered over the cathedral, a place that hides “a closed world of power in which not even the police could enter”. He found that not only the electrician had committed theft, but that since 2003 there had been looting in the cathedral: a worker took a tray of gold, an accountant took five million pesetas, others took the pilgrim’s brushes…
The Mice of God (Los ratones de Dios) seeks to uncover all those parallel events in which justice has not yet been done.
